Castle of Rumbeke

The castle of Rumbeke is one of the oldest Renaissance castle in Belgium.
According to legend Baldwin I, count of Flanders, fled in 862 along with Judith, daughter of Charles the Bald, to the fortress in Rumbeke. This led, after the intervention of the Pope, that Baldwin I and Judith got married in Auxerre and that the County of Flanders had been created.

The castle was for centuries inhabited by the Counts of Thiennes and the Counts Limburg Stirum, until it was damaged by the Beggars, and ravaged during the wars of Louis XIV of France, the French Revolution and the first and second world war.
In the 18th century the building was renovated. At that time, the Sterrebos was built with Prater in Vienna as a model.
